Little Sandy Bridge, Elderslie
Project Summary:
Menai Civil was engaged by Camden Council to restore and strengthen Little Sandy Bridge, an important pedestrian and cycle connection for the Elderslie community. The project involved bridge extension works, embankment stabilisation, scour protection, pathway realignment and landscaping to improve the safety, durability and accessibility of the crossing.
Delivered within a sensitive riverbank environment adjacent to public access areas, the works required careful environmental management, staged access planning and ongoing public interface coordination. Despite multiple river flooding setbacks during construction, the team maintained momentum and successfully reopened the bridge to the community in time for the end-of-year break.
Scope of Works:
Demolition and removal of nominated sections of the existing bridge.
Construction of temporary access tracks and working platforms to support piling and bridge works.
Installation of 600 mm piles, piers and abutment works.
Construction of the eastern bridge deck extension.
Construction of approach slabs and concrete footpath works.
Reshaping and stabilisation of eroded embankment areas.
Installation of scour protection, rock armour and riverbank rock revetment to the eastern and western embankments.
Realignment of the pathway and connection works to improve pedestrian and cyclist access.
Stormwater drainage works, including pits and pipes.
Landscaping, topsoil reuse, planting, mulching and site restoration.
Project Outcomes:
Successfully managed multiple river flooding setbacks, adapting the delivery approach to maintain momentum and achieve project completion.
Supported environmental outcomes by repurposing existing trees into habitat structures for local fauna.
Careful public interface management around adjacent pedestrian and cycleways.
Timely reopening of Little Sandy Bridge, restoring a valued local connection for the Elderslie community ahead of the end-of-year break.
